I had a student who was very behind in a class assignment on which everyone was working.  He/She had left his/her seat to socialize with another student. When he/she wasn't finished yet he/she tried to blame the other student.

I said,  “Well you're at least 50% responsible because you're the one who walked over there.”

The student got this big surprised look on his/her face and said, “Okay”. This was not the type of okay in which he/she was agreeing with me.  This was the equivalent of “whatever”.

I said, “What? Is this the first time anyone had called you to accept responsibility for your own actions?”

He/She again said, “Okay”.

After class when the student was by himself/herself I approached him/her and said,

“Do you know what I'd have said to you if I didn't want you to be an even better person?”

He/She said, “What?”

I said, “Nothing at all.”, giving him/her a light pat on the shoulder before walking away.
