How would a chair look if your knees bent the other way?
If you could dig all the way to the other side of the earth would you fall back into the hole? If you try really hard could you lift yourself up off the ground? These Teacher Honors Should Look Good on Paper by dual certified teacher, substitute teacher, in home tutor and behavior problems management expert J. Richard Kirkham B.Sc. covering Honolulu Hawaii and all of Oahu call or text 808.224.1870 the rest of the world email tutor2000@yahoo.com
As most of you know, I'm a dual certified teacher from Illinois, but here in Hawaii I'm a substitute teacher. That, along with my full time in home computer, cell phone and tablet tutoring and virus removal business covering all of Oahu as well as remote computer support for the rest of the English speaking United States, keeps me very busy. This Must Be The Longest Substitute Teaching Assignment in History http://inhometutoringhonolulu.com/index.php?topic=7.msg7#PleaseShareToSocialGroupsByCopyingFromTheLinkUp I thank the middle school for their confidence in me. They've realized that I care about the students and that I do my best to make my word gold as well as teaching the importance of word of honor to my seventh grade math students. I've been teaching math now for almost two years. When the teacher came back and another math teacher left, arrangements were made for me to have the same students. Being ADHD myself, I seem to have an instinct, both God given and experience based, in knowing what my behavior challenged student is feeling and how best to help him or her attain his or her educational goals. The Honors I Received I was recently made the primary teacher for my classroom. This means, as a long term substitute teacher, my name appears on the schedule and in the web based grading system. I've been asked to be on the data team to meet with government officials who score our school. Not an honor, but a fact, I had a student moved from the math class of another teacher. His/Her grade in math had quickly dropped from an A to an F. When he/she was moved into my math class. The student's grade quickly rose to an A. I don't know how many long term substitute teachers have had such honors and such events occur during their teaching careers, but I'm guessing I'm one of the few. I once again thank the middle school administration and teachers for their faith in me. Years Ago in Illinois I Was a Self-Employed Full Time In Home Tutor Specializing in Behavior Problems This is my calling again here in Honolulu Hawaii and I can even help via email or Skype. So I'm now accepting a limited number of in home tutoring appointments for students in Honolulu Hawaii. Limited number is not a sales pitch. There are only so many study hours after school and I rarely work weekends. I'll help with Behavior problems Poor grades Computers and Bullying My In Home Tutoring Methods are Unique I jokingly tell parents my goal is to get fired. Unlike many tutors and the reports I've received from parents, I don't overextend my in home tutoring sessions by just helping with answers. My goals are to Increase my in home tutoring student's self-confidence. Improve my in home student's student's study habits. Teaching my student to study more efficiently in less time. Improve my student's ability to get higher grades on tests. I have a math student who loves his/her Rubrics Cube. As opposed to take it away from him/her I made a deal. For every page of math done he/she can spend a few minutes with his/her Rubrics Cube.

Teachers never get much feedback from students. If you ask a student if he/she likes your class, well what else is he/she going to say, but yes. Student, "Mr. K you're the most enthusiastic teacher I know." I said, "Enthusiastic in what?" Student, "Teaching, I really enjoy your math class." A little lump came to my throat. I smiled and said, "Thank you." 68

A Tested Real World Reward System I Use Teaching Middle School by dual certified teacher, substitute teacher, in home tutor and behavior problems management expert J. I Don't Believe It's Just My Job to Teach Math In my middle school math class I've been long-term substitute teaching in for over 1.5 years, I've given lessons in sales techniques, applying for jobs, handling mean bosses and teachers, how to handle insults and much more. I believe as a teacher my job is to prepare my students for the world. When I Lived in Illinois and for a Few Years in Honolulu I Privately In Home Tutored Specializing in Students with Behavior Problems Such as ADHD I use the phrase behavior problems instead of behavior challenges simply for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) benefits. After I stopped doing private in home tutoring, I switched to my second love, in home computer tutoring and repair and automated SEO website design and promotion During my initial private in home tutoring career, I realized I, myself, am ADHD. When I get excited I speak rapidly, change the topic of the conversation often and interrupt people when they're speaking. I also, unfortunately seem to have a joke or comment after almost everything someone says to me. I learned how to control and use my ADHD through martial arts training. My God given gift of ADHD made me very good at anything on which I focused. I focused on computers and effective SEO website design. When I went self-employed full time I needed an extra income, thus I fell back into substitute teaching. I had no idea of the demand for qualified substitute teachers. I eventually ended up substitute teaching math going into my second year as I write this. Many of the new teaching and tutoring techniques I'll be sharing as I update my initial eBook on teaching, tutoring and behavior problem management techniques and solutions have been picked up or modified through this very long-term substitute teaching assignment. I Kept Asking Myself... I'm a Christian and I believe there's a reason for everything. I kept asking God what is the lesson I'm supposed to be learning in what seems to me to be the longest long term substitute teaching position in history. Then finally I had two similar events take which told me what I was to learn and do with this experience. Two of My Students with ADHD One student wasn't doing well in any classes except mine. When they changed his/her schedule to smaller classes the parent insisted I continue to be his/her math teacher. A similar event took place at a meeting. One of my ADHD students wasn't doing well in any of his/her classes except mine and science. The counselor decided to keep him/her in my math class and his/her science class. I was beginning to realize I made a difference when teaching students with behavior challenges. Then It Finally Happened... I was sending weekly free computer tips to all the teachers and staff. A teacher replied back to my last tip of 2016 before winter break asking if I knew anyone who could tutor English. I thought about it. I'd substitute English before and I'm an author. I told the teacher I'd tutor the student. The teacher was happy it was going to be me and gave me the email of the parent. I realized I was supposed to begin in home tutoring students again specializing in students with behavior problems and challenges such as ADHD. To drive the lesson in the student ended up being one of my math students. There were just too many events happening for this to be coincidence. I accepted my additional path of in home tutor specializing in students with behavior problems and challenges. One of My Most Popular Real World Reward System – Kirkham's Coin Real World Reward System Yes I took credit for this reward method. Theory Behind Kirkham's Coin Real World Reward System As I stated previously, I believe my job is to prepare students for life as well as teach them. By handing out an actual coin as a reward system Students will learn to equate intelligent thinking and outside of the box thinking with getting paid. Procedure When a student impresses me with an answer or a remark I take whatever coin comes out of my pocket and hand it to the student. It's explained to students all coins have the same value since the value is in the recognition of their answer or remark. To me "smart-alec" remarks require outside of the box thinking. Thus I reward them with a coin as well. Interestingly enough this cuts down on 'smart-alec' remarks. A great example of this was when I had my students solve a real world math problem comparing what I made working on computers to what I made substitute teaching. I then smiled to my class and said, "Now ask me why I'm still here?" A student said, "Never too early to retire Mr. K." I cracked up laughing and threw a coin to my student. Understanding subtle humor to me is a sign of intelligence and I reward that with a coin. Make Sure Students See The Coin Being Given to The Student Precedence for this is set with the m&m reward system a college swim coach used when handing swim team members who did exceptionally well during training an m&m. It wasn't the m&m. It was the recognition by the other team members. Quite often students will hold it up and announce, "I got a coin!" Making my job of recognition that much easier. NEVERS Take away a coin or any other reward. Put yourself in the place of someone who can barely control himself/herself. Everytime the behavior challenged student gets a reward it gets taken away. Don't you think you'd give up yourself after that? Keep rewards and consequences separate. Give a coin to a student because he/she asks for one. This defeats the purpose of the reward system. When a student asks me for a coin I reply, "Impress me even more than you usually do and I'll give you a coin." The word "even" is a great saver for me. Jokingly cut down a student when giving him/her a coin. First off, don't jokingly cut down students period! It may be a joke and the student may laugh, but someone inside it makes the student wonder if it's true. Yes I've seen a teacher do it. It's our job to make sure students feel good about themselves. Everyone of my students has been told he/she is an A student and they are A students! I just have to help them bring it out of them. Here's Something Interesting I'm Going to Do for You I'm updating an ebook I wrote after I finished private in home tutoring the first time around.
