What's Your Superhero name? A Positive Lesson for Students by In Home Tutor J. Richard Kirkham Covering Honolulu Hawaii and all of Oahu Text or Call 808.224.1870

I came up with this idea for a lesson plan when I was teaching middle school. So many students, especially the ones with behavior issues or grade challenges, only hear the negative things about them. To counter this, I developed this lesson which can be done orally or on paper....

It's really more fun to discuss as a class. I start...

I'm ADHD. This means I have an enhanced ability to see patterns and can laser-focus on a problem until I solve it. The ability to see patterns especially when I'm laser-focused is far superior to ordinary human beings.

Therefore my superhero name is Focus

Do you get the idea from the example?

The student states positive things about himself/herself. Something he/she does real good. It can be as many things as he/she can think of. Now based on what the student does best, the student then gives himself/herself a superhero name.

Funny even happened during one oral lesson

A student said, "Well, I distract easily so my superhero name is Sidetrack."

I cracked up laughing and even said

"We're saved here comes Sidetrack - wait, where's she going?"

She laughed and then I asked come on what do you do best.

She said, "I'm good at starting conversations."

I said, "You make people feel welcome by starting conversations! That's GREAT!"

Your superhero name is Discourse"

Superhero name on paper

Follow the same procedures. In one paragraph students explain their superpowers and at the end, give themselves a Superhero name.

Mr K I can't think of anything

That's sad indeed. When a child thinks so little of himself or herself because all he/she hears is negative things about himself/herself that the child cannot come up with anything positive about himself/herself. It's the job of both parents and educators to change that mindset in order for the child to reach his/her full potential.

Similar to the example above, ask the student what he/she likes to do. "Are you pretty good at that?" "What else?" Once you get the ball rolling the student will think of a lot of things at which he/she excels. Then the real fun part....

"Now what's your superhero name?
