The short answer is you shouldn't! A good qualified tutor does a lot more than help with homework. As both a dual certified teacher and in-home tutor with ADHD specializing in students with ADHD, I find there are three goals a good tutor has for his/her students.

3 Improve study habits and techniques of the tutoring student

There are study techniques I've developed or adapted specifically for students with ADHD. These study techniques are also quite effective for neural typical students as well.

The sticky point of knowledge

I've noticed over the years of teaching and tutoring students who excel in a particular subject that they eventually reach a point where they get stuck. I've noticed this primarily in math.

The problem is these students who've excelled in a subject haven't developed any study habits because it's been so easy for them.

That's where a good tutor comes in and creates a system of studying based on that student's strengths. For example, I've often told my ADHD in-home tutoring students here on Oahu to look for the patterns of the numbers when studying math. We with ADHD have an enhanced ability to see patterns. I teach my math tutoring students how to use that ability.

2 Self-confidence for the tutoring students

Think about what an academically challenged student hears both in school and even when the student gets home.

Teachers only using the student's name when the student's in trouble.
Parents grounding and taking away possessions
Some teachers and parents actually calling the student stupid

This kid's self-confidence is shot. It's the tutor's job to raise that self-confidence level to where the student knows he/she can find the answers. Otherwise, the student will continue to be dependent on the tutor.

1 Finally increase grades

I know I know, the first thing you, as parents, want are grades to increase, but the only way to do that is to just give the student the answers. Homework grades will improve, but not classwork or test grades because your child doesn't understand the work! Giving answers also makes your child completely dependent on the tutor.
