Simple Trick When To Use I or Me An English Grammar Lesson by J. Richard Kirkham B.Sc. The Only In Home Tutor Covering Honolulu Hawaii and all of Oahu WITH ADHD Specializing in Students WITH ADHD Text or Call 808.224.1870

I hear my in-home tutoring and public school students use I or me almost interchangeably, especially when there are two subjects, but there is a little trick I teach my students as to when I or me is proper grammar.

Generally use the pronoun "I" when the person speaking is doing the action, either alone or with someone else. Use the pronoun "me" when the person speaking is receiving the action of the verb in some way, either directly or indirectly. It can be difficult to know which one to use when a sentence has a compound subject or object, especially since many people use "me" in the subject position.

My Little Trick with Compound (two or more) Subjects

It's pretty simple really. Let's look at this sentence;

Me and John went to the store.

Now, take away the other subjects. In this case, there's just one other subject.

Me went to the store?

Does that make sense? I hope you said no.

So now we've determined it's I and not me, but what about the order.

Generally, the other person goes before you do. So instead of;

I and John went to the store.

The correct sentence is;

John and I went to the store.

The Same Trick Applies to Me

Sam threw the ball to John and I.

Usually, you see or hear this type of sentence from people at least attempting to use proper grammar. Let's take away one of the objects.

Sam threw the ball to I.

Hopefully, that doesn't sound right to you.

Sam threw the ball to me.

There you go. Now let's add the other object John in the order that we discussed.

Sam threw the ball to John and me.
